I would like to thank the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) and William Hollar (Sabic) for inviting METTLER TOLEDO to present a paper at AIChE Spring 2013 Session in San Antonio last week. The session – New Approaches in Chemical Manufacturing Operations – was a prototype session focusing on changes in unit operations, instrumentation and system design/operation in response to new design needs for chemical manufacturing plants in the 21st century.
My paper – In-Process Particle and Droplet Characterization for Process Design and Optimization in Manufacturing Operations – was focused on improving the filtration step utilizing real time in situ ParticleTrack and PVM technologies. Three case studies I discussed were related to:
- fines minimization during crystallization/precipitation
- droplet characterization during oil-water separation
- flocculant amount optimization in gravity thickeners and tailings ponds
Keeping in line with the session theme, these case studies demonstrated that integrating ParticleTrack and PVM technologies and instrumentation in chemical plants helps improve existing unit operations and scale-up efforts.
